hardware assembly workshop
20th and 21st February, 2008
A two day workshop on hardware assembling was organized for the 1st year students, on 20th and 21st of February, 2008. The first day classes were taken solely for the Electronics and Communication batches, and the later session on second day was exclusively for Computer Science batches. The workshop included familiarization of electronic components, detailed class on measuring instruments, working and uses of CRO. The workshop was conducted in the college auditorium, with an active participation of almost all the first years.
industrial visit- ITI palakkad

A group of 50 comprising of 47 students and 3 teachers made an industrial visit to ITI Palakkad on 23 Feb, 2008. This was an exclusive industrial visit for the second and third year students. Indian Telephone Industry (ITI) is one of the largest and ever first switching units in India. The switching system is manufactured in mainly through two steps. The team made visit to the PCB manufacturing unit. The complete manufacturing techniques were explained as well as witnessed before the members. The components are assembled on one side and soldering on the other side in the Switching Exchange Assembly. In the second stage, the components are inserted in the circuit board. After the industrial visit, the group had a couple of leisure hours spent at Malampuzha.
“How to write a technical paper and present it!“

The program included a total of 98 members, among 48 were members and rest were non members. Most participation was from the second year and third year students. As everyone was focusing for developing the interest of writing a technical paper, seminar find it useful to give some valuable tips for the students. The program was conducted on the active interest of the students. Program was of one hour duration and it mainly concentrated on the format of the paper. It is recommended to follow IEEE standards since it’s the biggest database in the world.
INDUSTRIAL VISIT – KELTRON CONTROL SYSTEMS

An Industrial Visit was organized by our SB to Keltron Control Systems, Ernakulam. A total of 23 students attended the IV. The employees of institution, Keltron were co-operative enough to take the team on a tour of the workshop. They were made all aware of the different manufacturing and processing techniques of a variety of materials. It lasted for 2hrs. We returned back to our college by 5.30 in the evening.
IEEE Awareness to Newcomers
4th, 9th Sept, 2008
The IEEE Awareness was planned to conduct in two phases which was led by Rahul Raj, Chairman and Arjun R. Pillai, secretary of the student branch. First phase was conducted during the admission dates to the freshers along with their parents in order to make both of them aware of what IEEE is and what are its benefits in brief. On 9th Sept, phase two was arranged exclusively for the newcomers who gathered at the college auditorium for a two hour session on the complete awareness about the IEEE and its activities inside and outside the college. Within one week we out of 160 students attended the awareness 94 turned out to have the membership. This was a record breaking membership campaign ever done in our Student Branch.
GENERAL BODY MEETING AND SELECTION

On the 17th September, 45 students members of IEEE Student Branch gathered for General Body Meeting called for conducting the election to formulate the new executive members. There were panel of 3 seniors that decided the main general body posts. Extended execom posts were elected through an open election. Same procedures were followed for the WIE Election also, and an open election determined their posts.
ANNUAL GENERAL BODY MEETING ‘08

The annual general body meeting of IEEE Student branch, College of Engineering Chegannur was conducted on 19th September 2008, at the college auditorium, with members attending the meeting. The Principal Prof. (Dr.) V.P. Devassia, student branch Counselor Mr. C.V. Anilkumar, and Branch Mentor Mr. Abey Sabu were present along the executive committee members. The meeting started with the code of Ethics, followed by welcome speech by Kerala student Representative & Link Secretary, Mr. Shaun Thomas. The Secretary read out the annual report of activities of SB during the year 2007-’08. Prof.(Dr.) V.P. Devassia gave the principal’s address stressing the importance of practicing the code of ethics. Branch Counselor Mr. Anilkumar made everyone the copetitions and the difficulties student branch is going to face in the coming years. The Branch mentor Mr.Jaison Abey Sabu gave a very brief and motivational talk on IEEE and its advantages. He also presented the branch operations guide supplied by Region10 for the successful operation of the branch activities. Mr. Bibin Bastin gave the chairman’s address and he conveyed his wishes to the new officers. In succession, the handing over ceremony took place. The files and positions were handed over to the newly elected office bearers.
STAR PROGRAM - Chengannur

The WIE Chapter of our college conducted a star training program on 12th December at Metropolitan HSS near Chengannur. It was conducted by 8 students of our college. It was mainly for 11th and 12th students. The program was conducted in two sessions. Classes were taken on : 1) Robotics 2) CRO familiarization 3) Personality development 4) Career guidance The forenoon session contained elaborate explanations about different electronics and computer. The afternoon session was a workshop on Computer hardware familiarization and electronic component familiarization.
C Programming Class

SB, CEC organizes C programming classes every year, exclusively for the first year students, opening a doorway to the world of programming. This year, classes were conducted from 17th December, 2008, consecutively for three days. The classes were taken by the second year students. A great number of junior students showed fabulous enthusiasm towards the class, particularly it was very helpful for those who came into engineering from the biology background.

IEEE-LINK Hub2 Student Congress

Hub2 student congress is a new initiative from college of engineering chengannur. This hub wise student congress aimed at increasing the IEEE awareness inside the hub, increase value of IEEE membership and give chance for more students to attend LINK programs as usually cut off are set for section level programs. The inauguration of the program began at 10:00am with a silent prayer and the pledging of IEEE code of ethics In the Hub2 Student Congress geared on with an introduction by Mr. Shaun Thomas introduction. This was followed by IEEE awareness presentation, History, organization, value of IEEE membership etc. Then an open discussion was conducted where students raised several doubts which were cleared by Mr. Anil Kumar C.V. and Shaun Thomas. Next there was a presentation on LINK and R10 GINI. The presentation covered the topics like history of LINK, its goals, awards, activities and future plans. The presentation on R10 GINI included topics like its goals, committees, advantages, Timeline etc. Further came another presentation on WIE. It mainly covered the importance of WIE affinity group, factors which led to its formation, its aim etc. Tea was served in between the event. Discussions were held on various ways to energize IEEE student branches and importance of faculties in running a student branch. It was advised to make an event calendar and to follow it strictly, also that every student branch to have a newsletter. At the end of the meeting IEEE brochures and IEEE-CEC CDs which included R10 Branch operations guide, reporting forms etc were distributed. The important website address, communication addresses, contact numbers and mail ids were given to the delegates. The program was highly beneficial to all the participants. The program has succeeded in achieving its goal of spreading IEEE in Hub2.
M-POWER‘08

IEEE SB, COE, Chengannur successfully organized M-Power‘08, which was a 1-day management workshop handled by Mr. Maneey V Paul, Director eTOP & HR Guide. The event was conducted in parallel with another event, hosted by the same, called LINK Hub2 Student Congress Ten colleges participated in the event and the number of participants touched 264. The forenoon session of M-Power began at 10:30am. This session was focused on the topic “Becoming an Effective Person“ that covered importance of body language, behavior, power of prayers etc. Some exercises like breathing exercise were done. The afternoon session of M-Power dealt with “Placements and Interviews“. All the important aspects of placements, interviews were discussed in detail. Overall, M-Power‘08 with games and facts was a new, inspiring and an ever memorable program for the young engineers.
SUN SOLARIS WORKSHOP

A one day workshop on the SUN SOLARIS 10 was organized by SB, College Of Engineering, Chengannur, in association with the NIIT Limited, Bangalore, on 5th Oct., 2008. SUN SOLARIS 10 is the most advanced UNIX based operating system in the planet and students who took part in this program benefited from the host services along with training program. It was conducted in two sessions, from 9:30 am to 4 pm, comprising of theoretical class, followed by a hands on workshop. A total of 53 members attended the program, with a participation of 42 members within the SB and rest made their way from VAST, Thrissur (3), MES, Kuttipuram (2), College of Engineering Kalloopara (2), Vishvajyothi College Of Engineering, Muvattupuzha (3), GEC ,Palakkad (3) The workshop was handled by a professional from Sun Microsystems. Course materials and DVD of Solaris OS was also distributed along with the Certificates.

REGION 10 Student Congress, Chennai

IEEE Student Branch of College of Engineering, Chengannur was very fortunate to participate in the Region 10 Student Congress held at Chennai, India. Six members represented the SB and it was indeed a great experience in attending an international conference and also true inspiration for volunteering in IEEE. The R10 Congress was presided over by Mrs. Mini Thomas, General Chair of R10. Mr.Lewis Terman, IEEE President inaugurated the congress officially. Both students and SAC chair took sessions on various topics. Out of it the major talk was on the emergence of “Internet Community“ as second life. There was an exhibition by various Student Branches and the day ended with the cultural night. On the 3rd day, there was a talk in GINI by Mrs. Mini Thomas. The day ended with the closing ceremony. All the participants came up with a handful of experience and memorable thoughts.
LINK Face 2 Face Meet

The SB took great interest to send four members to participation in the Link Face 2 Face meet held at St.Joseph’s College Of Engineering, Pala. The event was spectacular from the point of its organization. Student members from all the hubs made the presence there. It contained some energetic, open discussions and the elections towards various hub and assistant hub posts were also made along with. Mr. Arjun .R. Pillai of CEC was elected to the hub2 driver post. Student branches presented presentations on account of the activities taking place in their Student Branches. It also discussed about the statistical growth and performance of the various Student Branches in the Section.

Our Branch Counselor Mr. C. V. Anilkumar attended the branch Counselors’ congress hosted at Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology. The congress was inaugurated by Mini S Thomas and presided by Kerala section SAC, S. Gopakumar Sir. During the congress Mr. C. V Anilkumar was unanimously elected to the Vice President post of LINK for the year 2009.

On 29th August 2008 a team of 22 students were set as the participants and representatives of IEEE student branch CEC. The event was officially inaugurated at 9:30am and the first session comprised of the S-PAV session by Dr. N.N. Panicker about creativity and social awareness for engineers, to be followed by a talk by Ms. Jyothi Ramaswamy about role of WIE. The S-PAV session 2 by Sri. Gopakumar detailed about the art of communication. After which there was an open S-PAV discussion. There were some crispy moments with some games and small competitions, by which the day took an end. On day 2 there was a FSS promotion talk by Mr. Deepak R of NIITC and parallel to that there was the IEEE branch administration workshop and a mini link camp. The final session was a WIE meet and open discussion on empowering women. Two day camp took a grope with a photo session and closing ceremony.
