The IEEE Computer Society of College Engineering Chengannur, conducted an entry level competition
under Devcom on 20th October 2017 at 1:00 pm. The main aim of the event was to discover and reshape
the coder that lies deep within the mind of everyone. Ms Amalu Susan Santhosh welcomed the students
and divided them into 10 teams according to the availability of laptops. Mr Ganesh S explained the rules
of the competition, which was simple, as a question will be presented by the volunteer and the teams
must code an answer to it within a time limit. Much to the delight of the students, the event was more of
a fun game than a coding competition.
Ms Jewel Elizabeth presented the first question and explained the constraints in coding it. The teams
readily started attempts to crack the problem, which showed their interest in the event and most of
them were able to reach a practical solution to the problem. After the time limit, Ms Jewel discussed
about the quickest and easiest code to solve the question. It was followed by Mr Steven explaining the
next question and everyone got involved in coding at once. Most of the teams reached a solution but was
stunned when Mr Steven replaced their 10-15 lines of code by just 3 simple lines using standard libraries.
Mr Sooraj explained that this is the situation, when a coder needs to take brave moves to reach the
destination in the shortest path. It was followed by a huge round of applause which clearly shows the
good impact of the event on the students. One of the students volunteered to give a feedback which was
greatly positive and the session ended at 2 pm with a note of consent in everyone present.
