IEEE Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology College of Engineering Chengannur organized a webinar on May 2nd, 2020, titled Demystifying Product Development to provide students with a clear idea on how to proceed with product development ideas, and how to keep them relevant. The session was held by Dr. K.R. Suresh Nair, Chief Technology Advisor, Foundation for Innovation, and Social Entrepreneurship. The webinar was conducted through video conference, using Google Meet app. Through the webinar, he explained how new innovations should stay relevant to the present needs, and described the prerequisites required for a genuinely innovative idea. Furthermore, he talked about the different stages in development and various software you can use to aid you in your development, along with advice on how to present your ideas. He gave a well-structured example of how a device was innovated to discover Oral Cancer in its early stages without the need for multiple biopsies, from the concept to the final product. Other examples included Fiber Blankets to detect jaundice in newborns, Vein viewers to accurately determine the position of veins, and a device that helps to detect the early stages of breast cancer. Later, he went through a few case studies and explained to the students, the drawbacks of the product and how those were rectified.
Of the 100 participants registered, 60 attended the session. Overall it was a very beneficial session for the students where they were able to comprehend the challenges they’ll face while developing a novel product and how to overcome these and provide suitable solutions to occurring problems. The session was then concluded after a round of questions from the students.
